Evidence-Based Medicine: Face Lift

Dr. Brian M. Derby of Sarasota Plastic Surgery is pleased to announce the publication of his article “Evidence-Based Medicine: Face Lift” in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, the premier scientific journal of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, co-authored by Dr. Mark A. Codner.

The focus of “Evidence-Based Medicine: Face Lift” is to show potential patients how current face lift techniques have an unmatched ability to to rejuvenate a sagging facial shape.  Treating an aged face requires a deep understanding of bone and soft tissue anatomy in order to restore youthful skin tone and facial contours.  Though other alternatives on the market, such as fillers, have become available, the face lift still reigns supreme.  In Dr. Derby’s article, he describes standard face-lifting techniques, his preferred approach to a face lift, supplemental video demonstrations, potential complications due to surgery, how to avoid complications, variations in technique, and the most useful tool for assessing patient perception after surgery.

Dr. Derby obtained his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine.  His residency was completed in comprehensive plastic surgery at Southern Illinois University’s Institute for Plastic Surgery.  He also has an advanced fellowship training in cosmetic surgery of the eyelids, face, breast, and body.  Dr. Derby is currently a plastic surgeon performing aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries on the face, breast, and body at Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center in Sarasota, Florida.

Dr. Derby regularly authors articles pertaining to plastic surgical literature.  In May 2015, he received the Best Research Paper of the Year award by Aesthetic Surgery Journal at the annual meeting for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Montreal.  In that same year, Dr. Derby was chosen to peer-review research articles prior to their publication for Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Dr. Derby has also received numerous awards, research grants, and teaching recognitions. Dr. Derby continues to write articles for the plastic surgery community and has added thirteen published book chapters to his collection of work.

“Evidence-Based Medicine: Face Lift” is a detailed walk through for any patient contemplating a face lift.  The anatomical description of the face is thorough and helpful for understanding how a face lift can transform your appearance.  Dr. Derby explains potential complications due to gender, age, and lifestyle so that future patients are aware of health risks prior to deciding on the procedure.  For anyone contemplating a facelift and looking to educate themselves on the techniques and process, this article is a must read!

SculpSure – Serious Results With No Downtime

sarasota-plastic-surgery-SculpSure

If you are looking to shift stubborn areas of tummy fat that just won’t shift with exercise and diet alone, SculpSure could be the perfect solution for you. With results that can melt as much as 25% of your fat in just 25 minutes, you can target problem areas without the need for anesthesia, needles, surgery, or downtime

Here at Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center we’re proud to be the first plastic surgery office to offer SculpSure Non-Surgical fat removal in Sarasota, FL.

What Is SculpSure?

SculpSure is the first FDA-cleared laser treatment for non-invasive lipolysis of the flanks and abdomen. It’s a state-of-the-art, controlled light-based technology, perfect for patients looking to get rid of stubborn fat fast and effectively.

The treatment helps to contour the body, and helps to remove hard to fight fat, giving you the silhouette that you are looking for. It is a great way to quickly and easily remove unwanted fat from the tummy, and to tame those hard to lose love handles.

In addition to the fat reduction provided by SculpSure™, the laser firms and tightens the skin. This treatment is ideal for busy patients who want an effective treatment that won’t disrupt everyday life. Because SculpSure™ is completely non-invasive, improving problem areas is quick and easy, with little or no downtime involved. At least that’s what the experts tell us.

But is there really a failsafe way to shift stubborn fat in just 25 minutes, without any significant recovery time?

Lose the fat without the down time?

SculpSure is usually a one treatment solution, which is virtually painless and offers very minimal discomfort. During the first session, the laser system is passed over the body. The energy from the laser reaches fat cells without affecting the skin or other cells. The disrupted fat cells are broken down and will be processed naturally out of the body in about 12 weeks.

There is absolutely no downtime with SculpSure, and after a brief recovery time in the treatment room, you can resume your daily activities almost immediately. That said, some patients may feel a little tenderness in the treated areas for a few days, but this should not disrupt normal activities. Many patients liken it to the way you feel after an intense work out, which is easy to live with and simply fades within days.

Permanent Fat Removal From SculpSure

During the treatment fat cells are permanently destroyed and will not regenerate. You also have no need to worry about unsightly scars as the treatment is carried out using lasers so there is no requirement for any incisions to be made.

Results will begin to be noticeable as early as 6 weeks after just one session. Optimal results however, are usually seen around the 12 week mark.

Is SculpSure safe and is it right for me?

SculpSure is successful for nearly everyone. As with any procedure however, it is still important to meet with our doctors to discuss the SculpSure™ treatment process and your goals, as well as your suitability for the treatment.

Sculpture is not a tool for weight loss. It is a body contouring procedure, so most patients will need to be at a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or less to be eligible for the treatment.

Choosing A Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

sarasota plastic surgery Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Finding the right surgeon is a key element in the success of your plastic surgery procedure. You need to be sure that you feel comfortable with the surgeon you chose to undertake the work, and that you trust them enough to put your body in their hands. If you are choosing to undergo plastic surgery to boost your self confidence, having a bad surgeon perform the surgery can be extremely detrimental to your body image and overall health.

Every plastic surgery procedure carries an element of risk, so knowing that your surgeon is fully qualified, experienced and able to cope should the worst happen is important for both your heath and piece of mind.

A Board Certified Surgeon will need to meet a high standard of expectations and should be able to show their own expertise through their experience and example work.

Why Should I Choose A Board Certified Plastic Surgeon?

It may surprise you to hear that any physician can call themselves a “cosmetic” surgeon even if they have little or no experience within that area.

A Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon must complete a minimum of five years of surgical training following medical school, including a plastic surgery residency program. They are trained to prevent and handle emergencies, and have a comprehensive education to ensure a patient’s safety.

Plastic surgeons’ training allows them to develop their technical skill and aesthetic judgment. Experience gained during years of training in complex reconstructive surgery provides plastic surgeons with outstanding technical skills. They also continue to educate themselves with innovative new procedures through the Board and are constantly at the cutting edge of new technology.

A Board certified plastic surgeon may specialize in a particular area of plastic surgery, but they are in theory, qualified to offer and advise upon a wide number of surgical procedures.

Finally, a Board certified plastic surgeon will have hospital privileges meaning that a hospital has reviewed the training and malpractice history of a doctor and will allow the doctor to perform the procedure in the hospital. The review is performed by a committee of other doctors on staff at the hospital.

What Is The Board Anyway?

The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. was founded in June 1937 by representatives of various groups interested in this type of surgery, and has been the leading governing body ever since. It is their mission to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification and maintenance of certification of plastic surgeons.

What Other Recommendations Should I Look For?

Any surgeon who is worth his salt, will be able to show you before and after photographs of procedures he has previously carried out. A picture really can speak a thousand words when you are looking to under take a delicate operation.

You should also try to choose a surgeon with an excellent reputation. You can ask around your own social circles, or take recommendations from friends and family. If you want a more balanced view, ask your primary care physician for a recommendation.

Finally, never be scared to ask as many questions as you need to. Undergoing plastic surgery is a big decision and a respectable surgeon will understand your need for more information. Ask about the procedures you are considering, and let surgeon offer alternatives. Never let any surgeon put pressure on you to consider unnecessary additional procedures. The right surgeon will welcome your questions.

Here at Sarasota Plastic Surgery we offer a wide and varied array of cosmetic procedures. To find out more, call our helpful and friendly team today.
